SCRIPTURE

------

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

DEVOTIONAL

------

Jesus as God

John 1:1-5 tells us that Jesus was there in the beginning with God, making and creating the world, and tending to every detail that holds the cosmos in place. In Jesus, was life and that life was the light of mankind. Colossians 1:17 tells us that all things were made through Jesus. Nothing was made without him. He is before all things. And in Jesus all things hold together. Our world, our lives, even our bodies are quite literally held together by the power of Jesus. Romans 11:36 builds on this truth saying, “For from Jesus and through Jesus and to Jesus are all things.” Jesus is the light of life, the light of creation, and the light of men. As Father George W. Rutler says, “light and life go together, and as the light itself, [the scriptures] declare that [Jesus] is not a creature, but the divinity who creates.

Even though the Apostle John knew Jesus intimately as his closest, most cherished human friend, he chose to start his Gospel with Jesus as God. He was clear - our understanding of Jesus must be built upon this foundation. Jesus is God. He is the Lord. He is Yahweh. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.

REFLECTION

------

Imagine Jesus in the beginning, before time … with God, with the Holy Spirit. Spend a few minutes now in quiet contemplation and focused holy imagination. Permit your spirit to respond with a prayer, a question, or an action.

PRAYER

------

God our Father, our Creator and our King, You are Yahweh, the Lord, the Most High! Your glory shines like a light that nothing can darken. You are God, from the beginning, and you created us to be like you. Thank you for sending your Son Jesus. Jesus, you are Lord God, and you are worthy of all the glory. We give you our deepest devotion. Holy Spirit, would you enable us to honor Jesus. Would you help us prepare a way for Him? And, would you convict us of all sin and all debris that needs to be cleared away for Jesus? In Jesus name, Amen.
