There’s nothing like a deadline that could get you hyped and be doing what you need to be doing. That’s according to Adam Bloom, our guest for today’s episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Adam Bloom is an award-winning stand-up comedian and has been touring around the world to perform.
Adam Bloom chats with Chris Hackett, your host, on how he manages to be as funny and successful as he can be in his profession without being dragged down by stress. Discover the ins and outs of the professional comedy world in the countries he’s been. Adam acknowledges that humour can be universal or local. And, that’s what Adam is great at – to be able to transcend through the difference and indifference of people. Adam sees to it that he gives his best and refuses to be affected by the pressure in every performance he does. Listen as he shares how he ‘negates’ stress and how he manages to see it the other way around to make it beneficial for his career and day-to-day life.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Adam Bloom shares his stand-up comedy experience in different countries. He compares how different the humour is for different cultures. The language barrier is a big factor that Adam has been trying to beat to effectively communicate his punch lines. He shares that one time, he had to memorize a one-liner in the foreign language to get the most out of the audience's time.
In what way does stress manifest itself in professional comedy? Adam shares that making sure that putting up a great show on time is sometimes difficult to manage especially if some technical and organizational problems happen. Adam does a few gigs a night so to arrive early for the gigs and not get the schedule tangled up is a priority of his.
Don't let stress affect your performance. Adam says that once you've alleviated the stress and do what you got to do, there's a feeling of relief and fulfilment. It's more different when at the very start you never knew you could do it.
Sleep is very important for us to stay healthy and not get stressed. It’s a form of reset which clears your head and makes you gain the energy back needed for the next day.
Adam ‘negates’ the effects of stress. For example, when he’s about to catch the earliest train, he’ll see to it that he gets there 3-5 minutes early but if he, by chance, misses it, he uses the time to get some coffee. At least, he still gets to arrive on time wherever he’s going.
What techniques does Adam use to lessen the stress during a stand-up gig? “If you can’t do anything, you just have to stop thinking about it. and if you stop thinking about it, you stopped being stressed.” – Adam
BEST MOMENTS
"That mind field... you're walking through your gig knowing that at any given moment, a joke will suddenly fail. You're not in your comfort zone because you're going, "Does this work?" So, the second night you're there is great because you find out what you did wrong." – Adam
"Being put under pressure means you have to do something... If you cannot do anything, then stress is wasted energy." – Adam
"I'd rather be stressed than bored and I'd rather be under pressure than bored." – Adam
“If you have the ability to clear your head, it’s a really really powerful thing.” – Chris
