The beginning of this lessons explains why we don’t know what’s best - for ourselves or for anyone else.

"In no situation that arises do you realize the outcome that would make you happy. Therefore, you have no guide to appropriate action, and no way of judging the result. What you do is determined by your perception of the situation, and that perception is wrong."

The reason our perception of any and every situation is wrong is because we’ve chosen the ego as our guide. The course teaches us that in every moment we are either choosing the mind of ego or spirit.

The ego always leads to the perception of separation, differences, and conditional emotions: I’m happy because such-and-such; I’m upset due to this-and-that.

The mind of spirit always leads to the experience of peace, and our response is always one of love.

This lesson is teaching us that by realizing that we don’t perceive our own best interests, we can finally be taught what they are.
