Lessons From Jonah

Listen Later

Jonah 1:1-2; Proverbs 6:16-19; Exodus 34:6-7

Yahweh is a God of love and mercy, but also justice. He calls individuals and nations to repent.

Jonah 1:3

Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh, so he fled as far as possible. Is God calling you to speak to someone? What is your “Nineveh”?

Jonah 1:4-17

Jonah wasn’t faithful to his mission, but God was faithful and used Jonah to bring the other sailors to faith in the one true God, despite Jonah’s disobedience.

Jonah 2:10, 3:3-4

Yahweh is a God of second chances. Jonah disobeyed, but God gave him another chance.

Jonah 3:5-10

Despite Jonah’s failures, God used him to bring the people of Nineveh to repentance.

Jeremiah 18:7-8; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Jonah 3:10

Again, we see that Yahweh is a God of second chances. Even when God proclaims judgement, He may change His mind if we choose to repent and seek His forgiveness.

Jonah 4:1-11; Ezekiel 18:32; 2 Peter 3:9

Jonah was bitter and didn’t share God’s compassionate heart for the people of Nineveh. God loves mercy and desires all people to be saved – even the most undeserving. Do you share God’s heart for the lost?

Lesson 1: When God calls you to something, do it.

Lesson 2: Respond to difficult people with compassion. Don’t hope that they “get what they deserve”; hope that they repent and change and grow. Look for the best in people.
