When the AIDS epidemic hit the world, it especially hit Southern Africa. The worst hit country was the small nation of Swaziland. Twenty three percent of all children in the country were orphaned and the average adult life expectancy fell to age 32, the lowest in the world. Faced with this devastating epidemic that many consider to be a pandemic, a group of Church leaders and Christian businessmen came together and proposed a radical idea. Why not buy an abandoned mining town and create a new community of blended families to care for hundreds of broken and abandoned AIDS orphans? The remarkable story of Bulembu and its lessons for the global church is what we will talk about on today's Lessons from Legends program.

Mrs. Jean Neal of Rugby England was medically a hopeless case. Her troubles started when someone pulled a carpet out from under her feet, causing her to break her coccyx. What followed was 25 years of spinal agony that included 14 operations. Finally due to her excruciating pain, Jean was left with 2 choices, either a complete spinal fusion or paralysis from the neck down.  In the middle of this horrible choice, a dream led her to a religious meeting with German evangelist Reinhard Bonnke in Birmingham, England. There in front of 11,000 people she got out of her wheelchair and began running.  Her story became the talk of England but there was much more to her healing than we had ever imagined. When a person over 40 years of age who has been deaf and mute since birth is suddenly able to hear, that is quite a miracle. When it happens on national TV in front of a whole nation, then it's something quite amazing. Such was the case of Zakayo Jaguna of Nakuru, Kenya. Not only did this miracle happen, but seven months later he had learned to speak the Kikuyu dialect and was able to tell his remarkable story. The lessons learned from this epic healing, filmed by the program's host, Dr. Berin Gilfillan, enable him to describe from Scripture and from this real event the anatomy of a genuine miracle.

As a producer fresh out of University, I was excited about documenting a blind miracle. When Reinhard Bonnke prayed for 55 blind people I had my camera zoomed up close. When five were healed, the crowd went wild. People were so excited but not me. I saw the 50 who were not healed. This led to one of the greatest lessons I ever learned from Reinhard Bonnke.
