Tough Cookie Talks

Lessons From Lifting We Can Apply To Activism

Listen Later

How can I talk about fitness after Roe v. Wade being overturned? I can't. Not today. But being that diet culture and what just happened here are two different flavors of the same shit sandwich, I do wanna take the time to talk about some parallels. Before we get into any of this, I need to make one thing perfectly clear. I don't actually know WTF I'm doing here. I'm learning right along with you. I have always used my platform as a way to make sense of things that I’m working through in my own life and it helps to speak in a language I already know--strength training.

Now that we have that out of the way. . .

Silence does not=neutrality. As fitness professionals, it’s important to consider people’s mental and emotional well-being, as well as safety in the spaces we hold. Silence is not the answer here. When we, as fitness professionals, fail to take action or take a stance at times like this, it says a lot about who we actually care to help. So no, I will NOT stop talking about this anytime soon.

On this episode we talk about:

  • The many lessons from strength training we can apply to activism of all kinds.
  • How to use my idea of the strength savings account (from episode 7) to establish consistent action and why this matters.
  • How I'd LOVE to have an actual activist come on the podcast and tell us all WTF to do.
  • Screaming into the abyss.
  • Google doc for abortion rights activism
