Act 2: You're On!

Lessons from Loss: True Leadership with Bevin Mugford

Listen Later

In one of our most authentic and instructive conversations, you’ll meet Bevin Mugford, a dynamic executive with over 15 years of experience in leading people, training high-performance teams and building a start-up from the ground floor.  She is host of a weekly chat series called “Thursday Thrive'' and author of a “Saturday Meditation” blog and an in-demand public speaker.  A Mom of 4, Bevin is self-described nerdy researcher and CrossFit junkie.

Bevin graciously shares her most vulnerable moments throughout her life. She makes a point of sharing how she has many times felt sorry for herself, wallowing and wailing - but she also shared how she then found the strength to rebuild and to reinvent herself again. After the trauma of losing her son, Bevin found a way to turn her grief into a way to support others in their journey of loss.

Some highlights include:
“The world is not going to come find you feeling sorry for yourself sitting in the basement, you're not going to get lucky. Lucky can't find you. When you're hiding down in the hole of this living room in the basement. You have to just go out and do something can make your own luck. Yes, people say when they make it, they're like, Oh, it was good timing. And they always put luck in there. But the bottom line is they were doing something to have that luck find them for that timing to be right.”

“Was I lucky? Hell yes, I was - but it's because I took action to allow that luck to find me and that timing to be right. So go out and make your own luck by being out there and literally moving your body and connecting with people.”

“When you engage in a process, are you willing to be cognitively flexible to adjust with new information? So that's key with new information. Now you see how curiosity and creativity come into this incredible dance. Curiosity asked what is happening, what am I learning? What's the pattern and creativity says, and how can I work with and how can I walk forward with this? And how can I grow? How can I learn? How can I invent? How can I iterate? And those two, together to me, are the Cornerstone strengths that inform and drive entrepreneurship, and being a business owner and often a trailblazer as well.”

“For anyone who is connected to me on Instagram, it or Facebook, it has been incredibly important for me to show the authenticity of a loss journey. There are days where you feel super strong when you do things like handstands and headstands, and climb ropes at the CrossFit gym. And I show that and then there are days where you sit on a beach and wail for your child who drowned in the water that you're literally looking at. And I show that and we can hold both. That is the human experience. It's not one or the other”

“Losing my child is the worst thing that happened to me. You also have a worst thing that happened to you. And it's different. But it's the worst thing that you know. And that pain is real. And it's equally as painful to you. Because it's the worst thing that you know. And we need to meet each other in that truth. There is not a worst pain.”
