The Ones Who Succeed

Lessons Learned At Tumblr & Beme with Entrepreneur, Engineer & Investor Matt Hackett | Episode 30

Listen Later

Today on the podcast, I have a conversation with engineer turned entrepreneur turned angel investor Matt Hackett. Matt, a self-taught programmer, who joined Tumblr in 2010 as their VP of Engineering and oversaw the tech team as the product scaled to a platform amassing just south of 500 million users worldwide. However, a significant turning point in Matt's Career was his involvement as the Co-Founder and CTO of Beme, a short-form video sharing app founded alongside well-known youtube vlogger Casey Neistat. It was at Beme that Matt experienced once again the high highs and low lows that make up one's entrepreneurial journey. CNN acquired Beme in 2017. Today Matt is currently in exploration mode (according to his Twitter bio) and has invested in 22+ companies following the CNN Acquisition and is an active advisor too many startups in his portfolio. I sat down with Matt to discuss his experience as a prominent engineer in the fast-paced, ever-changing world of startups, lessons learned at Tumblr and Beme and, of course, what's next for him in the coming years. This conversation was recorded on August 11th, 2020, thanks for listening!
