Psalm 127:1,2
We are all trying to build something and protect something. And ultimately, behind many of our attempts to build and protect lies a deep-seated need to be in control. We like to work and toil because we think it means we have control over the results. But, if we’re trying to build and protect a measure of peace and rest and joy for ourselves and our families, we’ll find that so much is out of our control and nothing we toil at can change that sometimes.
We need a break. We need a rest. We need the Lord to be in charge of the results. Thankfully, he is! The Lord is in charge of the results – the results that matter most—the results of our salvation and of his gospel being spread through his Church’s labors. And he’s also the one who blesses our everyday labors so we can find joy and purpose in the work our hands find to do today. All the toil in the world can’t gain for us what Christ gives to us as gifts.
