Are you ready for a smooth and successful transition when bringing a new dog into your home? This week on "Let's Bark About it Tampa Bay," We're replaying an early episode with  Brandi Burkett from Pets Enrichment and Training Solutions who guides us through the essential steps. From setting up gates and preparing a crate to planning eating and bathroom routines, we cover everything you need to know to create a happy, healthy environment for your new furry friend.

And what about older adopted dogs? Brandi emphasizes that they need just as much attention and training as young puppies to ensure they receive the structure they might have missed. We also explore the importance of assessing your lifestyle before bringing a pet home, and share personal stories about our own experiences and lessons learned. Plus, Nikki's heartwarming and humorous tale of unexpectedly adopting a surrendered puppy from a vet clinic will leave you smiling.

But that's not all! We discuss the benefits of doggy daycare over dog parks, especially with more people working from home. Brandi offers valuable tips on crate training, managing a dog's access to the house with barriers like baby gates, and strategies for introducing a new dog to existing pets or children. Don't miss our advice on scheduling, planning feeding routines, and ensuring safe spaces for pets to interact gradually. Tune in next week for another exciting episode, and remember to visit our website, www.UrbanDogStudio.com, for show notes and resource links mentioned in this episode.

Can choosing the wrong  dog upset your entire household? Our first guest, Brandi Burket, a certified pet trainer and owner of Pets Enrichment and Training Solutions (PETS), would argue it can. Join us as Brandi unpacks her personal journey in pet training that started at the Humane Society in Tampa back in 2009. With her wealth of experience, Brandi highlights the critical importance of selecting the right dog that aligns with your family's lifestyle to avoid common pitfalls such as overwhelming energy levels or unexpected behaviors that often lead to pets being surrendered.

For those pondering which dog might best fit their home, this episode is a treasure trove of insights. We dive into the specific needs of high-drive breeds like German Shepherds and Malinois, which require substantial mental and physical stimulation. Brandy makes a compelling case for considering an older, calmer dog if your schedule is jam-packed or if you crave a serene home environment. Families with young kids or older adults will benefit from her expert advice on balancing size, age, and temperament to ensure a harmonious match.

Ever wondered if gender matters when bringing a new dog into a multi-dog household? Brandy offers her expert opinion, elucidating why two female dogs might be more prone to conflicts. She also underscores the importance of spaying and neutering to manage behavioral issues. Finally, the episode wraps up with invaluable tips on finding a professional trainer who uses positive reinforcement techniques, ensuring a joyful and trusting relationship between you and your new furry friend. This episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to making informed, responsible choices in pet ownership.

When our beloved pets face a crisis, every second counts, and having the right tools on hand can make all the difference. That's why we were thrilled to welcome back the ever-caring and insightful Dr. Cherie Buisson, a.k.a Doc B, to shed light on the importance of assembling a pet first aid kit. Together, we traversed the landscape of emergency preparedness, from the essential items every pet owner should have on hand to the personal tales of her own dachshunds' health scares that put these items to the test. Doc B's expertise illuminates how a well-stocked kit is not just about having supplies; it's about the peace of mind and readiness to protect our furry family members when they need us most.

Navigating the do's and don'ts of pet first aid can be as complex as the animals we adore. In this episode, we go beyond the basics of bandages and gauze, unpacking the critical knowledge required to effectively manage pet emergencies. Our conversation spans the importance of proper medication administration, the dangers of substituting human drugs for pet pain relief, and the nuances of managing a pet choking incident. It's an educational journey filled with practical wisdom, including why keeping your vet's number close by and knowing the location of the nearest animal hospital can be life-saving. Doc B's personal anecdotes and practical tips arm you with the guidance to face any challenge, whether you're at home or adventuring outdoors with your pet.

Preparing for the worst doesn't have to be daunting. As we wrap up this enlightening dialogue, we delve into specialized emergency scenarios like pet CPR and how to gear up for hurricane season with your four-legged companions in mind. Doc B reassures us that while pet first aid and training are important, they complement rather than replace the expertise of veterinary professionals. Our heartfelt discussion ends on a high note, with the revelation that Schotzi, Doc B's "quality control wiener," has bounced back to her spirited self. It's a testament to the resilience of our pets and the power of preparedness that gives them, and us, a fighting chance.

Our guest today is Dr. Cherie Buisson (a.k.a. Doc B),  owner of Helping Hands Pet Hospice and Euthanasia Service.  Dr. Cherie Buisson is a 2000 graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She spent over 10 years in private practice and shelter medicine.  She started making pet hospice house calls in 2011 and found them to be the most fulfilling part of her practice. She is one of the first Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarians in the world, and the first to practice in the state of Florida. DocB is a Dachshund fanatic who enjoys reading, cycling, canoeing, and quilting.
