Episode 8 of Break Free From The BS challenges one of the most misunderstood phrases of all time: "Jack of all trades, master of none." Because what most people do not realise is that the full quote ends with "but oftentimes better than a master of one."
Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the belief that we need to be naturally talented, highly skilled, or guaranteed success before we are allowed to try something new.
We compare ourselves to people who have years of experience, get intimidated by their level of mastery, and talk ourselves out of opportunities before we've even begun. The result? We miss out on experiences, growth, joy, and the chance to discover parts of ourselves we never knew existed.
In this episode, we explore the mindset traps that stop us from giving things a go. The pressure to be good at something immediately. The belief that every hobby must become a side hustle. The idea that if we start something, we have to commit to it forever. I share some of my own experiences of the unnecessary expectations and pressures I have placed on myself over the years, and how learning to let go of those beliefs has created more freedom, curiosity, and fulfilment in my life.
We also talk about the importance of listening to yourself. Not every experience is meant to become a lifelong passion, and that is okay. Sometimes the value is simply in trying, learning, and discovering. If something lights you up, lean into it. If it doesn't, give yourself permission to walk away without guilt or shame.
This episode is an invitation to stop letting perfectionism, comparison, and fear of failure keep you on the sidelines. Life is meant to be experienced, explored, and experimented with. You do not have to be a master to begin. In fact, some of life's greatest gifts are found in simply being willing to try.
