As we begin the new fiscal year 2021-2022 , I talk to Tax Specialist and Partner at Carpenter Box, Rachel Pearce.

Rachel tackles property taxes, Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT payable on land and property transactions, not just purchases), and Capital Gains Tax, and why some Landlords might benefit from setting up a company for their rental properties. 

What would Rachel do if she woke up one day as Chancellor of the Exchequer? With no shortage of ideas, Rachel’s top 3 steps would be to

  • tackle National Insurance (a tax in another name)
  • give HMRC a bit of a revamp to be able to provide some basic tax advice to taxpayers
  • put tax on the syllabus for high school students
