Hebrews 10:1–10

Hebrews 10 turns our attention directly to the sacrifice itself. The blood of bulls and goats could never truly take away human sin. Those sacrifices were repeated year after year because they could not provide final cleansing.

But Christ came in the body God prepared for Him and willingly offered Himself according to the will of the Father. His sacrifice was different in nature, perfect in every respect, and therefore sufficient once for all.

In this lesson, we examine why the old sacrifices were only shadows, why Christ’s sacrifice alone could truly deal with sin, and why returning to the old system would mean abandoning the reality for the shadow.

Why was the death of Christ necessary?

Hebrews 9:15–28 gives a precise answer. The new covenant required death, forgiveness required the shedding of blood, and the old covenant sacrifices could never perfect the conscience or finally remove sin.

Christ did what the Aaronic priesthood could not. He entered heaven itself, offered His own blood, and by one perfect sacrifice secured eternal redemption for those whom God has called.

This lesson traces the argument verse by verse and shows why Jesus had to die—and why He only had to die once.

Hebrews 9:11–15

The rituals of the first covenant were never intended to provide the final answer to sin. They could cleanse the flesh, but they could not cleanse the conscience.

Hebrews 9:11–15 shows us what changed when Christ came.

The Levitical high priest entered an earthly sanctuary repeatedly with the blood of animals. Christ entered the greater and more perfect heavenly sanctuary ἐφάπαξ (ephapax)—once for all—through His own blood, obtaining eternal redemption.

This is the great contrast of the passage:

The old system provided external cleansing.

Christ provides true cleansing from the guilt of sin.

Through His sacrifice, Christ cleanses the conscience from dead works so that we may serve the living God. And unlike the restricted access of the former tabernacle, Christ’s finished work opens the way into the presence of God for all who come to Him by faith.

This is why Hebrews 9:15 can conclude:

“And for this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant…”

The new covenant rests upon a better High Priest, a better sanctuary, and a better sacrifice—the blood of Christ Himself.

The Intended Imperfections of the First Tabernacle

Hebrews 9:1–10

Hebrews 9 begins by looking back at the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priestly ministry associated with the first covenant.

The writer’s point is not that the Mosaic system was flawed in origin. God Himself established it. Its limitations were intentional.

The priests ministered continually. Access to the Most Holy Place was severely restricted. Blood had to be offered. And even after all of this, the sacrifices could not make the worshiper perfect in conscience.

That is the central issue.

The first tabernacle could regulate worship. It could provide ceremonial cleansing. It could temporarily address sin within the covenant structure. But it could not finally remove guilt or cleanse the conscience.

All of it was pointing forward to what the writer calls:

“a time of reformation.”

That time arrives in Christ.

The repeated gives way to the once-for-all.

The restricted gives way to access.

The external gives way to true inward cleansing.

This is why the first tabernacle had to be replaced.

In Hebrews 8, the writer explains why the New Covenant was necessary. Jesus is not merely another priest in the old system—He is our superior High Priest, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary and mediating a better covenant established on better promises.

The Mosaic covenant could expose sin and regulate Israel’s worship, but it could not bring final perfection or transform the human heart. Through Christ, God established the covenant Jeremiah had promised: one marked by inward transformation, true knowledge of God, and complete forgiveness.

Hebrews 7:23–28 contrasts the Aaronic priests with Jesus Christ. The former priests were many because death prevented them from continuing in their ministry. Their priesthood was temporary, and each priest eventually had to be replaced.

Christ is different. He remains forever and holds an unchangeable priesthood. He always lives to intercede for those who draw near to God through Him.

The Aaronic priests were also sinful men. Before they could minister on behalf of the people, they had to offer sacrifice for themselves. But Jesus is holy, innocent, undefiled, and separate from sinners. He needed no offering for Himself; He offered Himself once as the perfect sacrifice.

The law appointed weak men as priests, but God’s oath appoints the Son, perfected forever. In Christ, we have the sinless High Priest who lives forever.

Why Does Christ’s Priesthood Replace Aaron’s? — Hebrews 7:11–22

In this lesson, we examine why the Levitical priesthood could not bring spiritual perfection and why another priesthood was necessary. Jesus did not become priest through physical descent from Aaron; He arose from the tribe of Judah and was appointed according to the order of Melchizedek, “according to the power of an indestructible life.”

Because the priesthood changed, the law governing that priesthood also changed. The former system maintained distance from God, but Christ introduces a better hope through which believers draw near. His priesthood was established by the oath of God, and Jesus Himself has become the guarantee of a better covenant. The central message is clear: do not return to the lesser when God has provided the greater.

Melchizedek Is Greater Than Abraham?

Hebrews 7:1–10

Hebrews 7 shows why returning to the Levitical system would be spiritual regression.

Melchizedek was both king of righteousness and king of peace, and his priesthood existed before the Law, before Levi, and before Aaron.

Abraham, the great patriarch, gave Melchizedek a tenth of the spoils and received a blessing from him. Hebrews explains the significance plainly:

The lesser is blessed by the greater.

Even Levi, still in Abraham’s loins, is said to have paid tithes through Abraham. Therefore, the Levitical priesthood itself acknowledged the superiority of Melchizedek’s priesthood.

The writer’s point is clear: Christ’s priesthood, according to the order of Melchizedek, is greater than the Aaronic priesthood.

Why return to the lesser when the greater High Priest has come?

Who Is Jesus? — Luke 7:18–23

John the Baptist knew Jesus was the Messiah, but he did not yet understand the full order of His mission. John expected judgment; Jesus revealed that salvation would come first.

Through His works, Jesus fulfilled the prophetic signs of Isaiah and confirmed His identity as the Christ. Even when God’s plan unfolds differently than expected, faith rests in who Jesus is.

Why You Can Never Lose Hope — Hebrews 6:9–20

Christian hope rests on more than emotion or circumstance. God confirmed His promise with an oath, showing that His purpose cannot change and that He cannot lie. Because Jesus has entered God’s presence as our eternal High Priest, our hope is described as “an anchor of the soul, both sure and confirmed.”
