Comments on Leviticus 27
Host Steve Webb emphasizes the importance of talking about subjects on the Lifespring! One Year Bible that may make people uncomfortable, particularly money. In this episode, he examines the concept of tithing, which is the offering of 10%, and notes that it is a commandment given in Leviticus. While the New Testament does not give a requirement to tithe, it does mention the tithe with favor, such as Hebrews 7:4-10, when Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek. Additionally, giving is commanded in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2, where Paul suggests that it should be planned for and done regularly.
Steve shares his personal experience of tithing. He grew up in a non-believing home and admits to being a stingy giver. While he regularly gave some money, he never gave a tithe. However, he rationalized that Christians were not obligated to tithe under the New Covenant. It was not until he was in his 40s and his wife, who grew up in a faithful church family, suggested that they tithe, that, after prayer, he changed his mind.
Steve concludes by saying that each person must decide how much to give in their heart, and they should not give reluctantly or because of pressure. He quotes 2 Corinthians 9:7, which says that God loves a person who gives cheerfully, and that God will generously provide all you need.
