In this episode we discuss QUEER YOUTH HOMELESSNESS. Statistics show that queer youth are four times more likely to experience homelessness than their non-queer peers.
When we speak about homelessness we are referring to a range of ways a person can experience a lack of stable housing. This could be due to running away, transitory or episodic periods of homelessness (couch surfing), unaccompanied homeless youth (shelter hoppers), and street-dependent youth (squatters and travelers).
To discuss this issue we chat to Elvis, who is a 21 year old gay man who struggled with coming out to his rejecting family. He now lives in a refuge in Melbourne.
We also listen back to snippets from the conference for National Youth Homeless Matters Day that happened in April. Speakers from YGender Erik Lock and Kochava Lilt discuss what trans and gender diverse young people need from refuges.
Hopefully we’ll start to see some changes with regards to accessible and safe housing options for queer youth.
