COVID-19 Teaching By Radio Program
Country: Liberia
Lesson #2
Subject: Language Arts
With the closure of schools due to the COVID19 pandemic, Rising has adapted our Secondary Literacy content to create a radio program that will strengthen and build students’ language acquisition and key comprehension skills even when they are out of school. Our approach builds off decades of research into the science of how children learn to read, and read to learn. Students learning at home require no learning materials but there is the option to provide additional support via SMS.
Our reading program has been formatted into four ranges for Junior Secondary School and three ranges for Senior Secondary School designed to cover a breadth of comprehension skills that progress in complexity. Each lesson begins with a mindfulness activity to provide students a routine and set the tone, and followed by instruction and closing off with a health and safety message. Students will engage with texts read aloud in a variety of ways; such as discussion and writing. Additionally, lessons will provide a “think aloud” model for reading strategies for students to build their knowledge for obtaining key ideas and details in complex text. The learning content focuses on the development of priority skills that all students need to master to successfully pass many national exams.
