The Merge

Life From Above

Listen Later

In this Lent 2 episode of The Merge, Pastor Sarge takes you into the nighttime conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus (John 3:1–17) and names the pressure many of us feel: the need to prove ourselves.

Nicodemus comes “by night” with credentials and certainty, “We know…” but Jesus offers something Nicodemus can’t control or earn: new birth from above. This episode is a steady invitation to step out of performance religion, release the dashboard life, and receive the love that’s already reaching for you.

What to listen for

  • Why Nicodemus coming “at night” matters (and what it reveals about our hidden questions)
  • What Jesus means by being “born from above” (more than self-improvement)
  • The Spirit as wind: real, powerful, and not controllable
  • Why the cross (“lifted up”) is the anchor of assurance, not your performance
  • John 3:16 as rescue announcement: God’s love aimed at the world, including you
  • Takeaways

    • God meets us in the night and leads us into the light
    • Faith is not a ladder to climb; it’s grace to receive
    • You can release the need to prove yourself and live from God’s love
    • New birth grows through the means of grace: prayer, Scripture, community, and mercy
    • Try this today (1-minute practice)

Open your hands as a sign of surrender and pray:
“Holy Spirit, give me life from above. I release my need to prove myself.”

      Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, meet us in the places we hide our night places, our anxious places, our tired places. Forgive us for turning faith into performance. Holy Spirit, breathe on us with life from above. Set our eyes on Christ lifted up for us and let Your love drive out fear. Make us people of light humble, honest, and free to love our neighbor. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Series Refrain: Jesus Christ is Lord, so we receive life from above, not approval from below.
