Life-hack: 4 things Brain Surgery Taught Me About Motivation & Dopamine | Business Brain Podcast

Listen Later

In this episode, we will deep dive into how motivation arises and is sustained in the brain, primarily through a chemical called dopamine. We will explore common misconceptions like, “motivation can get you started but it definitely can’t keep you going.”

Ever wonder why it might be difficult to commit long term to a business idea or project? Ever wonder why our initial drive and passion fizzles out and is replaced by the mundane reality of work and success? This is all thanks to dopamine. Dopamine release in the brain diminishes over time as we become accustomed to the tasks we carry out and the routines we set for ourselves. In this episode, we will discuss tools and strategies to overcome this.

We will discuss many aspects of dopamine and how it is tightly linked to motivation. In particular, we will discuss the 4 things that my experience working with patients in neurosurgery has taught me about dopamine, motivation, and what we can do to increase it.

These 4 points are:

-Dopamine and movement exist together.

-Dopamine and motivation is largely driven by novelty.

-Dopamine anchors our pleasure and can actually trigger disappointment - not motivation.

-Dopamine is a learning signal and helps us develop habits.

P.S. I offer a high-performance business-based coaching service that helps new entrepreneurs launch a digital business and develop the mindset required to succeed in business.
