Roommates That Can Drive You Batty
A sure fire approach for any book is placing a level of reality that everyone can relate to even if you add a level of the supernatural to it. You have a strong grasp of "what's real" to relate to in the reading. Then there are the books beginning with an enticing prologue introducing the reader to an alternative world and saying Accept It. This is the way of the narrator's world in Life With Boris Karloff. The book begins with questions about monsters in appearance and monsters in a sheep's clothing. The story that follows the question of who we are underneath and all of us have qualities which might be difficult for others to accept. Okay, down to brass tacks & the carpet.
Our hero finds an apartment with four roommates who are "unusual" in appearance and habits, easily defined as monstrous. Anyone with a connection to horror icons will catch who they are right off the bat. Brian, huge, scarred with stitches, has trouble speaking, and huge. Christoff, a goth dude probably from Romania, old school, and has a thing for bats, the flying kind. Francois, a misshapen human being with a hunch back and goes crazy when he hears BELLS. Michael who wears overalls or boiler suits, usually wears a mask, and comfortable with a bloody knife, can't take him with you as he scares the hell out of others. The narrator's family might appear normal, but beware the monstrous attitudes. The question of who are the monsters is the core of the plot itself bringing in murder, betrayal, and confrontation with the forces of evil. Your true friends could easily look like monsters.
Rob Shepherd has written a book not universally accepted by everyone. It's tongue in cheek, in a kind of way. A definite alternative world with humor and danger with a sense of aloofness to its strangeness much akin to the television show The Addam's Family (which took their life serious and quirky as much as this book does with its characters). The ending is a bit strange and had to read twice over to catch what I apparently miss and, even then, strange. And Yes, readers, Boris Karloff is there as well. Will you like it? To each their own tastes; I can only for mine.
