On Resistance and Procrastination: Intelligence or Something to Overcome?

Life is perfect sometimes. I planned a different episode and recorded it 3 times only to realize it wasn't happening. Either the time for it was off, or it's not meant for me to record. Some things are simply 'good ideas' with no energy to back them up.

Resistance and procrastination are only problematic when we're fixated on the plan - the timeline and goals. Otherwise, I assert that there IS an intelligence worth paying attention to.

I wonder what your experience is with these 2 words? When you notice yourself feeling resistance, or putting something off - aka 'procrastinating' - do you push through, or do you get curious?

We all want to 'be ourselves,' yet we live in a world where fitting in to get along ofter supersedes that real drive. Some people go in the other direction - seeming to exaggerate their weird. Others, such as some of those among us who are neurodivergent, can't help but be themselves.

When a marriage no longer fits, it might not be weird. It might even make sense. This episode was originally recorded in late 2021, a few months before my divorce date. I found myself feeling vulnerable and afraid, alongside the contrasting awareness that this was the right move.

When the walls of that container became smaller and smaller, I was quite ready to free myself. And then as I got closer, and even now that the divorce is just a few months around the corner, it's getting louder in here like…

Oh no, where's my security? I mean, it's what we want. It's what we say we want. We need the other to be okay in life. We need a man to be fulfilled or happy or taken care of. All of the things that go into that. For a man, I don't know what it is for him because I'm not a man. So I'm speaking from woman-of-a-certain age point of view. And you know, now this time in life.

What once made sense may not make the same sense now.

People change. After a couple of decades raising children, and striving for the things we're supposed to strive for, it’s not surprising that two people might find they no longer share the same connection or direction.

The expectation that a relationship should remain unchanged for a lifetime begins to feel unrealistic.

In this episode, Rethinking Purpose, I briefly explore what gives us our sense of purpose, and the motivation behind it.

Purpose is often tied to what we're doing in life, or what we're giving in life, basically anything that we're engaged in that makes us feel like we have purpose. 

When I recorded this, I was thinking back to a time when I was doing work that I really loved doing. And I wondered if this podcast is, in part, me looking for joyous purpose again.
