Bens back - and this time he means business. Family business...Benedict Macallan, protagonist of Dead of Light and wonder-worker malgr lui, has travelled the length and breadth of Europe and still discovered no family like his own. Maybe Macallan blood really is a biological sport, a freak of evolution.
What Ben does discover is that he cant escape his birthright. He can run to the sun and hide among strangers, but he cant hide his powers from himself, and when a friend asks for help he has to use them. With blood on his hands once more, its farewell la dolce vita; he gets on his bike and goes home.
Home is no sweeter than it was before, but it has changed. His gangster relatives have lost control somehow, of themselves and their city; more than one evil is at work here now, and even Bens unique talents may not be enough to save the one he loves.
If he can work out who that is...

A thoughtful protagonist
I liked this sequel very much. As a protagonist, Ben really lets you into his head. For being gifted with powers, he remains very human, and very vulnerable to the self-doubt and self-deprecation that comes with being human. For those people who find the perfection of Superman pretty boring, this is a fun super hero to get to know. The story rolls along at an excellent pace, with action and character development in solid, equal measures.
I'm interested in what happens with the Maccallan women though. Will they grow backbones? Will there be little short stories drifting out into the void about what happens when a perennially downtrodden group of chicks are shown that the ones constantly abusing them are vulnerable? I want to read about the revolution!
Get at it, would you Chaz?
I love it.
I really loved this book. I think it was a combination of an imperfect hero and a good cast of characters, but mostly it was that the story didn't resemble any of the many books out there. It was a very easy read. I got hooked very early on in the story. And I didn't stop reading until the book ended. I only wish there was one more book coming out I could love to read more of Ben's adventures.
Same book - beautiful new edition :-)
I'm sure there have been some edits and the like, but it's the same fabulous story it has always been. If you've read it and loved it, support an author and get it again. If you've never read it, you're in for a treat!
Ben's return home was not a welcoming occasion.
Ben has returned after a two year self exile from everything. Ben had left the family because he did not have magic, some how his twin sister, born 30 minutes before Ben had gotten all the magic that should have Ben's. Ben's family controlled the town by fear ad demanding money from all local businesses, but now someone was killing and the family's control was slipping.
Amazing voice!
The voice in this book is fabulous. It takes you straight to Ireland and enchants you. He does things with stream of consciousness I didn't know were possible. And it's all built on a high stakes, high tension plot where Ben has to rescue his girlfriend and stop a gang war.
