Jesus was born into a world so inhospitable to children that an innkeeper relegated the laboring mother of Christ to give birth amongst animals. Children were so disposable in the eyes of the earthly king that he ordered the mass killing of infant boys around Bethlehem in an attempt to secure his political power against the threat of a foretold newborn King.
For women facing unplanned pregnancy and their preborn babies the world we live in today is just as hostile. But ending this depravity and oppression is precisely why Jesus came.
The solution today is the same as it was 2,000 years ago: Immanuel, God with Us. As the Gospel of Luke proclaims, Jesus is the One “To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79).
