I remember seeing an iPad cash register for the first time. I thought it was pretty innovative, and easy to use. I talked with my friends at Graphite – Apple Specialists, and they told me how easy it was to actually put together. I installed the server on my Macbook Pro, and the software on my iPad. I had a register up and running within a couple hours.

This software is from a company called Lightspeed (www.lightspeedretail.com).  They have a free Lightspeed app that connects your iPad to a register. You login as a user set by the server, and your POS terminal comes up. You can sell using a customer – invoice system, or turn the iPad into a simple cash register.

There are many options that come with this system. You can attach a cash drawer, printer, or even a credit card reader. The system also has an iPhone version, with mobile hardware kit (an iPhone case with credit card swipe on the back).

The POS also turns your machine into a web eCommerce store. People can go to a webpage and browse the inventory, then buy right from the site.

Lightspeed is not free, but they do have a 30 day trial to test out the software and see if it’s right for you.
