Like the two Marys (Tuesday 27th Week in Ordinary Time 2020)

Listen Later

Luke 10

The Church teaches the author of the Bible is the Holy Spirit. We can compare the way the Bible was completed to how the Word of God became flesh. The Blessed Virgin Mary didn’t randomly encounter the Archangel Gabriel. She was prepared from her conception to participate in the work of redemption. She dedicated herself to the service of the Lord and was attuned to his words. She was always paying attention to the Lord. When she heard the message of the Archangel, she didn’t doubt. She gave herself to the Holy Spirit as Gabriel announced her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” The Blessed Virgin bore the Word of the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit. She gave her flesh so that the Word of the Lord became flesh on earth.

Comparably, those, who were attuned to the words of the Lord, composed the Scripture by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. They were paying attention to the Lord and his Spirit. When the Holy Spirit inspired them, they gave themselves to the Word of the Lord by their testimonies and writings. These testimonies and witnesses reflect the human elements of language, custom, society, etc., just as Jesus has human nature, the ethnic features, and the culture of his time. In a sense, the Bible is another form in which the Word of the Lord takes human flesh.

Today, we hear the story of Martha and Mary. Martha’s sister Mary chose to listen to what Jesus was saying, and Jesus praised her. When we reflect on how the gospel books were written, we find there were many like Mary, who paid attention to Jesus and his words that they left their witnesses and testimonies. These witnesses and testimonies, with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, became the foundation of the gospel books. By giving their ears to Christ, they also became like the Blessed Virgin, bearing the Word of the Lord in their flesh.

I ask myself how much time every day I listen to the Lord before his Presence in the Church. Am I not like Martha, who is distracted by many things? “There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” I pray that I may also choose the better part so that I may also bear the Word of the Lord in my flesh.
