History as real life
Ms. Wylie's love of and expertise in the Civil War period shines in all her books, and especially Lila's Vow. Captain Jack Montgomery comes into the life of Lila Sutton on one of the worst days of his life. In June of 1863, in their home, she and her mother nurse soldiers wounded during the battle in their town, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Jack watches her every move, helps out when he can, and falls as quickly in love with Lila as she falls in love with him.
But it's time of war and nothing goes smoothly for the lovers. The only thing for sure is their love and passion and belief in the Union cause. The action never stops. Battle scenes are torturous and heartbreakingly real. Jack's emotions are portrayed so authentically that the reader aches for him and for every soldier serving at the present time in a war zone. Lila doesn't sit home pining away for the man she married before he went back to war. She becomes a Pinkerton agent spying in the South. Information she comes across becomes important enough to the North that it helps end the war. You can just feel that you are living their lives, feeling the anxiety of the wife waiting for the husband to come home and the fear and bravery of the soldier in the middle of the chaos of battle. And just when you think Jack and Lila's world will settle down, Ms. Wylie throws in a surprise.
Lila's Vow hits every point you want in an historical novel. The history is spot on. The romance is lovely, sweet and passionate at the same time. Excitement never ends, and you are kept on the edge of your seat until the very end of the book. Then the end is satisfyingly happily ever after, though you still want the story to go on and on.
Lila's Vow
From the very first paragraph, I was "caught up" in the story and couldn't wait to read what happens next. To me, that's the sign of a good book. If it captures me from the very beginning, then it's a winner! Although there was a good bit about different battles between the North and the South, it wasn't overdone. There was just a nice mix between the love story of Lila and Jack and their separate lives dealing with the war. Great read!
Don't miss this one!
