Lilian joined the London Metropolitan Police in 1919 as a Sergeant, part of the Metropolitan Women Police Patrols. At the time, this was most unusual for women and initially not at all popular either with fellow Police Officers or the Public as it was deemed "unwomanly". Eventually rising to the rank of Chief Inspector.
