In his book Dr Nik writes: A
recent study by Edelman PR found that 87% of consumers believe that companies
should be as concerned with societal interests as with business ones. Studies
are also showing that people believe in this strongly enough that they will
switch brands solely because of the values expressed and the causes supported
by a brand.
The challenge for brands in this
new environment is to try to find that sweet spot that connects with people’s
growing interest in social issues and their desire to actually get involved
themselves in making a difference. This is part of the beauty of movements –
instead of the company taking it upon itself to support causes, now it can
enable others to participate in worthwhile causes and endeavours. In his book
Tribes, the marketing guru Seth Godin describes a movement as being: an idea that spreads with passion through a
community.
