Leaping fishes in shallow waters
While it's well written, there should be more depth in the character's development. Most of the relationships are not fully explored or given more emotion. I cannot feel for the people in the book.
Empire at the End of Its Rope
Little Hut of Leaping Fishes is a saga-like novel set during the last quarter of the 19th century when China's centuries-old traditions are being first challenged then threatened, by the economic interests of the West. The stage for the story is Plum Blossom Village where we follow the life of Mingzhi, grandson of the despotic feudal landlord, Master Chai. Mingzhi escapes his grandfather's clutches by studying to become a mandarin - at that precise juncture in history that brings the collapse of Imperial China and and its ancient system of Mandarin governance.
It is stimulating for a change to read a good historical novel from a crucial period of Asian history, that is not written from a eurocentric point of view.
Excellent book about the Boxer rebellion and source of chinese diaspora.
I loved the description of a young man torn between his families' expectations and his concepts of justice and integrity. He struggles with the coming of new ideas from the west and his love and understanding of his cultural heritage. He comes to learn the truth about his mother and his father who hid their relationship but nurtured him with love and understanding in the face of real danger from the patriarch of the rich family.
Beautifully written. A striking read
I really enjoyed this book. It offered a view into life in China like I haven't read before. A enjoyable and memorable read.
