What if we're spending so much time trying to perfect our lives that we're forgetting to actually experience them?
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, I sit down with poet, engineer, farmer, and author Matt Thomas for a thoughtful conversation about nature, creativity, success, relationships, and learning to notice the ordinary moments that make up our lives.
Matt spent decades as an engineer before poetry became another way for him to explore his curiosity about the world. For him, engineering and poetry aren't opposites. Both involve craft, creativity, observation, and asking questions.
Working with nature also challenged something deeply ingrained in him as an engineer: the desire to make everything exact.
On the farm, perfection simply doesn't exist. What matters is whether something serves its purpose. That realization led Matt to one of the central lessons he has taken from nature:
Good enough is perfect.
From there, our conversation moves into why we rush through everyday life without really experiencing it, how animals and nature can remind us how limited our time really is, the relationship between AI and human creativity, changing definitions of success, and why the people around us may ultimately matter much more than the things we accomplish.
Matt also takes us inside Cicada, Dog, & Song and explains how cicadas, dogs and music represent cycles in our lives and the ways we remember different chapters of our experiences.
Ultimately, it's a conversation about slowing down enough to notice what is already happening around us and remembering that this life, ordinary moments and all, is worth experiencing.

What is school actually preparing us for?
We spend years learning how to pass tests, follow schedules, complete assignments, meet expectations and move from one grade to another.
But are schools teaching children how to think?
Or are they sometimes teaching them how to comply?
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Zhara York sits down with Dr. Toby Travis, Head of School, author, consultant, researcher and founder of the TrustED® framework.
After almost 15 years as an educator herself, Zhara brings a personal perspective to a conversation about a system that shapes nearly every one of us.
Schools continually introduce new programs, initiatives, assessments and requirements designed to improve education.
Yet teachers are exhausted.
Students can become disengaged.
And we continue searching for solutions.
Dr. Travis argues that schools may sometimes be focusing on the wrong things—or approaching the right things in the wrong order.
His work points to something much more fundamental:
Trust.
The conversation explores trusted leadership, teacher burnout, bureaucracy, student engagement, curriculum, teacher autonomy, technology, international education and the relationship between school culture and sustainable improvement.
But eventually the conversation becomes about something much bigger:
What should education actually prepare a human being for?
College?
A career?
Or life?
Zhara and Dr. Travis explore whether education should help young people learn how to think independently, discover how they learn, understand themselves, develop curiosity and eventually find purpose.
Zhara also connects the conversation to a pattern she has noticed interviewing successful people on Little Wild Experiences: success often requires knowing who you are, what you want and what gives your life purpose.
Dr. Travis discusses the TrustED® School Leader 360 and explains why leaders may perceive their own leadership very differently from the people experiencing it.
And near the end of the episode, he challenges the traditional idea of teaching itself:
“It's not about transferring knowledge. It's about guided self-discovery.”
The conversation ends with a question bigger than test scores, curriculum or school rankings:
When a student walks out of school for the final time, what kind of human being do we hope walks out that door?
Dr. Travis's answer brings the conversation back to purpose, value, gratitude and what it means to contribute to the lives of others.
Because education doesn't only influence what we know.
It helps shape who we become.

What happens when the life you planned suddenly changes?
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Zhara York sits down with author, executive coach, speaker, and craftsman Chip Scholz for a thoughtful conversation about identity, reinvention, success, purpose, and the unexpected experiences that shape who we become.
Chip has experienced job loss, the deaths of both of his parents, a stroke, major career changes, and multiple reinventions. Rather than seeing those experiences only as setbacks, he talks about what they taught him about control, flexibility, time, and choosing what to do with the circumstances life gives us.
The conversation explores what Chip calls the happiness trap: constantly believing the next accomplishment, client, promotion, or level of success will finally make us happy. He challenges that idea by asking a much more immediate question: why aren't we finding meaning and happiness in what we're doing now?
Chip and Zhara also explore the difference between success and significance, how professional identities can become borrowed identities, why purpose doesn't have to be something enormous, and why being useful may be one of the most meaningful definitions of success.
They discuss Chip's self-leadership philosophy from Small Decisions, Big Shifts, including his Five C's: context, clarity, conditioning, choice, and character. And they close with a conversation about curiosity, learning, and why continuing to ask questions may be one of the keys to continuing to grow.
It's also an unusually personal conversation, with Chip turning several questions back on Zhara as they reflect together on starting over, career, travel, writing, identity, and what it actually means to build a successful life.

What happens when you push yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of—and discover a completely different version of yourself?
In 2020, author and podcast host Teri M Brown and her husband Bruce embarked on an extraordinary journey: 3,102 miles across the United States on a tandem bicycle.
But the physical journey was only part of what was happening.
Teri had previously emerged from an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage that had affected the way she saw herself. On the bicycle, with thousands of miles and countless hours to think, she began questioning what she wanted from her life and whether fear had been preventing her from becoming the woman she wanted to be.
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, we talk about endurance, relationships, confidence, living in the present, and what happens when an experience forces you to confront your own limitations.
Teri shares the mindset that carried her through the hardest days of the journey: she wasn't riding yesterday's miles or tomorrow's miles. She only had to ride today.
Completing the journey also changed the way she viewed another lifelong dream. If she could ride a bicycle across the United States, why couldn't she become the author she had always wanted to be?
So she did.
We also talk about the lessons that became 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, why Teri believes everyone has to discover their own rules for life, and another chapter of reinvention following the loss of her husband Bruce.
This conversation leaves us with an important question:
What could you do if you stopped believing you weren't capable of it?

What would you be willing to sacrifice for freedom?
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Zhara York sits down with human rights and women’s rights advocate Zolal Habibi for a deeply personal conversation about Iran, freedom, sacrifice, and the choices that shape our lives.
Zolal shares how losing her father at a young age shaped her understanding of freedom and ultimately influenced a life-changing decision: dedicating herself to the Iranian resistance and the pursuit of a free and democratic Iran.
We talk about the personal cost of activism, the role of Iranian women in the movement for change, women in leadership, perseverance, and what it means to consciously choose a cause — not just once, but every day for decades.
Zolal also shares one of the most personal moments of our conversation: a remarkable dream about her father on the night she decided to join the resistance.
And when I ask her to choose between freedom and security, her answer comes without hesitation:
Freedom.

Thinking about writing or publishing a book? There are some things you need to know before spending your money.
Michele DeFilippo has spent more than five decades in publishing, beginning her career at Crown Publishing in New York in 1972. Today, she is the owner of 1106 Design, where her team has helped more than 4,000 authors professionally prepare their books for the market.
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Michele and I have a candid conversation about what really happens behind the scenes of publishing a book.
We talk about traditional publishing versus self-publishing, why getting a major publisher doesn't automatically guarantee success, what authors should understand about royalties and ownership, and why some publishing models can leave authors paying upfront and again every time their book sells.
Michele also explains why nobody can honestly guarantee that your book will become a bestseller and why authors should be extremely cautious when a company makes promises about fame, sales, or bestseller status.
But this conversation isn't only about the business of publishing.
After working with thousands of authors, Michele believes writing is often about something much deeper: self-expression, meaning, sharing what you've learned, and leaving something behind that can continue affecting another person long after you're gone. Sometimes even one sentence in a book can change the way someone thinks.
We also discuss fear of rejection, why so many authors struggle to market themselves, how AI is changing publishing, and why believing in your own work matters before expecting anyone else to believe in it.
If you've ever thought about writing a book, are currently working on one, or are trying to figure out how to publish without making expensive mistakes, this conversation is for you.

What if an experience stays with you for decades because you're not finished with it yet?
Michael J. Muccio has lived many different chapters.
He found success early in corporate America. He made money, earned recognition, climbed the ladder, and became highly successful in the hospitality industry.
But something was missing.
Despite accomplishing what he thought he wanted, Michael realized that traditional success wasn't giving him the fulfillment he was looking for.
That search eventually led him to Zig Ziglar.
What began with Michael discovering Zig's work eventually developed into an extraordinary mentorship and the opportunity to work with Zig's organization.
But Michael's journey didn't end there.
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, we talk about success, money, purpose, pride, relationships, faith, forgiveness, peace, surrender, and the patterns we sometimes repeat until we're finally willing to confront them.
Then we get into an experience that stayed with Michael for more than 35 years.
Michael describes experiencing what he interpreted as a vision involving warfare in heaven and the origins of evil.
He didn't immediately know what to do with it.
Years passed.
But the experience stayed with him.
Eventually, it became:
📖 Evil's First Breath: Dawn of Darkness
This conversation isn't simply about a book or religion.
It's about the experiences we carry.
The things we postpone.
The mistakes that teach us.
The difference between happiness and peace.
The danger of pride.
The power of choice.
And what can happen when we finally act on something that has quietly followed us for years.
Toward the end of our conversation, Michael shares that regardless of what ultimately happens with his book, he already considers himself successful because he followed that inner prompting, wrote the story, and finally put it into the world.
Maybe that's the bigger question for all of us:
What has stayed with you for a reason?

How much control do we really have over the lives we create?
When life isn't going the way we want, it's easy to point toward the economy, government, our employer, our upbringing, or the opportunities we didn't have.
And sometimes those obstacles are very real.
But where does society's responsibility end and our own responsibility begin?
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, I sit down with Henryk A. Kowalczyk, an author, entrepreneur, and political writer who grew up in Poland under socialism before immigrating to the United States at 33.
Henryk arrived in America after already spending 15 years of his adult life in Poland, giving him a unique perspective as both an outsider and, after more than four decades here, an insider looking at American life.
His experiences shaped strong views about freedom, government, opportunity, personal responsibility, and what it means to pursue happiness.
But this conversation goes beyond politics.
We explore:
• Can you truly understand freedom if you've never experienced having less of it?
• How much of our happiness is society's responsibility, and how much is ours?
• Can someone work incredibly hard, become successful by society's standards, and still build the wrong life?
• Why Henryk says that if you want to blame the government, sometimes you should first “look at the mirror.”
• What Henryk experienced growing up under socialism in Poland
• Why he eventually left Poland for the United States
• What it felt like to suddenly experience a very different level of freedom
• Starting his first American business only 11 months after arriving in the country and eventually selling it ten years later
• Freedom versus equality
• Government, opportunity, and individual responsibility
• Why political ideas affect our everyday lives whether we're interested in politics or not
• Independent thinking and questioning the information we're given
• What worries Henryk about America's future and what still gives him hope
• Why he wrote Can America Ever Be Great Again?
You may agree with Henryk.
You may disagree with him.
But perhaps that's exactly why conversations like this matter.
Little Wild Experiences isn't about telling you what to think. It's about understanding the experiences that shape how people think.
And Henryk has experienced two very different worlds.
Toward the end of our conversation, we come back to the question at the heart of the episode:
How much of the life we want are we waiting for someone else to create for us?

What happens when you finally achieve the financial success you spent years chasing—and realize you want something more?
Daryl Dittmer went from a difficult beginning, addiction and recovery at 19, to becoming a top salesperson, entrepreneur, business owner, and eventually the second-largest shareholder in a company that sold for nearly $10 billion.
But at 48, he made a decision that changed the direction of his life: he stopped chasing money.
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Daryl and I have a candid conversation about ambition, money, identity, responsibility, and the price we can pay for what we call success.
We talk about his recovery and the moment that forced him to change his life, why taking responsibility doesn’t mean blaming yourself, how our past can shape us without controlling us, what decades in sales taught him about people, and why professional success alone doesn’t necessarily mean you are successful at life.
Daryl also shares the meaning behind his memoir, When I Stop Fighting, and why he eventually realized that the biggest fight had been with himself.
After years of achievement, Daryl’s definition of success changed. Instead of simply making more money, success became being able to wake up in the morning with a smile on his face and actually enjoy the life he had built.

What if you’re already on the right path, even when it doesn’t feel like it?
After more than 50 years on a spiritual journey and decades of traveling the world, Indra Rinzler has learned that finding yourself isn’t necessarily about reaching one final destination.
Sometimes it’s about trusting the experiences, relationships, mistakes, questions, and unexpected turns that slowly reveal who we are.
In this episode of Little Wild Experiences, Indra and I explore identity, happiness, inner peace, spirituality, intuition, travel, relationships, and what it really means to trust the process.
One of the ideas that stayed with me from our conversation is simple:
We are always on the path. We just don’t always know it.
We talk about:
• Why getting what we want doesn’t always make us happy
• The difference between happiness and inner peace
• Finding our identity and eventually learning to let parts of it go
• Why some experiences only make sense years later
• Learning to listen to and trust our intuition
• What traveling the world can teach us about ourselves
• Astrology and the Enneagram as tools for self understanding
• Why what we call a mistake may actually be part of the process
• The unexpected journey behind writing Indra’s Net
• Why sometimes we have to stop forcing things and allow life to unfold
Indra also shares the unusual story behind his book, Indra’s Net: A Seeker’s Guide to the Human Experience, and how stepping away from the project for years ultimately became part of the process of creating it.
Toward the end of our conversation, I said:
“Sometimes you have to trust the process.”
Indra’s response?
“I would suggest all the time trust the process.”
And maybe that’s the bigger question this conversation leaves us with:
Can we trust where life is taking us even before we understand why?
