Is it possible to be generous if you are obeying a command? True generosity is volitional: a choice we make, an exercise of our free will. But obeying a command? That feels like somebody forcing their will upon us, or an obligation. Paul said “it is for freedom that Christ set us free.” Yet, Jesus, and Paul, both provide commands to be generous. And if Christians believe in an all-powerful God that can do anything, including raising people from the dead…and if Jesus could do all sorts of miracles, including making coins appear in the mouth of a fish…then why does Jesus and his apostles not just advise us, but command us, to give ourselves and our money?
