The big mouth buffalo is a filter feeder. Its cousins the smallmouth buffalo and the black buffalo eat "stuff" like mussels, crustaceans, plants and algae. They have throat teeth to grind food. I am pretty sure what I caught was a smallmouth buffalo in full spawn colors
