Well written metaphysical fantasy
The Lives of Alexios by Chance Maree is a collection of novellas previously published in another variation (see book description): Velia and the Magician, Kimi and the Shaman, and Leta and the Sufi. The link between these stories is a wristwatch and its owners â beginning the watchâs journey in New York City in 1923 and continuing to Saudi Arabia in 2004.
Quick summary: Veila and the Magician meet after the Magician witnesses Veila (a young black girl with the power to know things others donât) harassed by boys on the street and then get hit by a car. He is the first on the scene and they become close friends.
Kimi and the Shaman: Kimi learns that she has terminal cancer at the time she is wife, stepmother and caretaker to a child who will be wheelchair bound for his entire life. As a result of her diagnosis, she makes the dramatic choice to follow a Shaman in Mexico, which leads to many adventures/misadventures.
Leta and the Sufi: Leta is a beautiful young woman visiting historical religious sites in the Middle East where she becomes interested in a young man who doesnât reciprocate her feelings. The Sufi is a spiritual guide. Leta believes that objects (rocks in particular) hold the memories of incidents they witnessed and that it may be possible for people to interpret these memories.
While these are separate stories, there are links between them (not concretely). The author takes a generous metaphysical approach to how the stories of these characters hold meaning and is quite playful at points throughout. The prose is excellent and powerful. The overall concept for these novellas was creative and unique. I enjoyed the fantasy aspect and the spiritual threads that wove through the stories. Overall, this is an excellent collection â well written, powerful, and resonant metaphysical fantasy.
