In this episode of Emunah (Hebrew for faith, belief), Dr.ShaNita Nolan of Woodbridge, VA shares her journey of grief after losing her spouse and tells how her faith in God helped her turn her grief into purpose. She’s the host of the podcast “Widow’s Lounge.”
Her advice to widows? “Know that you’re not alone. It might feel like you’re alone and you’re in the valley, but God is with you. Do not isolate, that is what the enemy wants you to do – to isolate and be alone … God wants us to be whole.”
The biggest challenge faced by widows is economic support, she says. Also, she talks about “secondary losses” experienced by widows who may have depended on their husbands for certain activities, chores, and duties.
She implores widows to “allow yourself to grieve.” That’s the beginning of healing.
The Bible, which is filled with scriptures on widowhood, makes it clear that widows are to be treated with honor and compassion and offered protection so that no one takes advantage of them.
Here are scriptures on the topic: Deuteronomy 14:29,16:11, 24:19-20, 26:12, and 27:19; Psalm 35, 68:5; James 1:27; Mark 12:40; 1 Timothy 5:4; and Isaiah 1:17.
This episode is for you if you have suffered a loss in your life or know someone who has suffered a loss, and you want to assist that person.
