In 1948 the world was still trying to recover from a devastating war there was a new threat that caused fear.  The destructive power of the atomic bomb and the uncertainty of its future use were forefront in the minds of many.  C. S. Lewis wrote an essay entitled, 'Living in the Atomic Age' which addressed that fear. His words at that time have much to say to us in our time today.
