Beyond

Living Inside Privilege. Patriarchy. Being Resourced.

Listen Later

In this episode Jesse and I talk lots about our privilege. We’ve done so quietly for a long time in many ways, trying to figure out how to be with ourselves and be ourselves. We are tender hearted, caring, powerful human beings who want connection and to live with integrity.  We are also both resourced, cisgender men, expensively educated, and have white skin. We believe that we have each chosen to be here at this time in history, in these unique bodies, with these exact experiences, and are committed to living our souls purpose, our destiny, our unique life that only we can live. We want to do that with aliveness and consciousness.

You are invited into our exploration of the important territory of how to live with our privilege and resource.

We decided that it’s time for us to bring our voices forth and see what happens.  The Beyond is not about having answers or being right, it’s about crawling around in the muck, feeling deeply, bringing curiosity, and being willing to be vulnerable as we find our way. I was powerfully impacted this week by a story from Bayo Akomolafe, who shared the wisdom that now is not a time for creation, there is no way for us to know what to create or what structures, paths, etc, will or should look like.  He suggested that the work of today is to sit in the unraveling, to be in the discomfort of apocalypse, and enjoy the mystery.

Jesse and I are attempting to be in this beautiful, powerful, uncomfortable unraveling. We are curious about the terrain that exists beyond privilege. Today we ask, How do we get beyond, or find a different relationship with, or become aware of the patriarchal energies that surround us like the air we breathe.

Jesse brings such deep intelligence and care to these conversations. If you haven’t yet followed his substack, I recommend it. jessekjohnson.substack.com

So there we have it, our attempt to be in this beautiful, powerful, uncomfortable unraveling. Sharing about the terrain that exists beyond privilege. Hopefully we are now a little further beyond, in that different relationship with, becoming aware of the patriarchal energies that surround us like the air we breathe.

Here are my take aways from this episode.

  1. Jesse’s reflection about being a light at the end of a dark tunnel. It’s am image that is sticking with me.
  2. Finding the place in us (in me) that is capable of disagreeing, of not knowing, of feeling off, and being with myself enough (I call it not getting lost) that I can remain and deepen connection!
  3. I am very interested in the terrain where all our conventions break down and the seen and unseen patriarchal, privileged  ways of measuring success, status, and well being are distant memories.  That feels like the light I want to hold.
  4. These conversations are ongoing - there are so many trails. Trails I wish I had followed while recording. It is so tempting for me to go back and edit/change/add, but Beyond is a living entity. I trust the way it flows, the way it unfolds, the way we work our way into these tender, important places inside of an episode and from episode to episode. From moment to moment.
  5. As I listened back on this podcast, I learned the importance of trusting my body and my in the moment experience. There were many moments when I wish we had paused, taken some breaths, and listened to the moment…now I know.
  6. Looking at our shame and guilt is a gateway into learning, and our own agency and relationship with ourself.  Honor that I do damage and be in healthy relationship with it.  Not separate from suffering.
  7. True Power. Expanding Power. Lets get into the territory of being connected and taking amazing care of each other. Where we know and care about each other. I want to live in that world.
  8. This is important. Lets keep exploring.
