Their new platform is, despite their ownership, will be available in many major vehicle brands, including competitor GM, and allows developers to interact with the capabilities of the vehicle's entertainment system.
If this new standard comes to pass, it will streamline the development process for companies looking to get their apps into cars across brands. As it stands now, it is similar to the mobile platforms, where, other than Windows and Windows Phone, you have to completely redevelop your app for each platform.
