What if the later decades of life weren't something to brace for, but something to build toward?
That question sits at the heart of today's conversation, and at the heart of our guest's life's work.
Deborah Shaffer is a CTI-certified Co-Active Coach, a Transitional Intelligence Coach, and an Enneagram practitioner who has lived the very journey she now guides others through. At 75, she is writing her book Navigating Longevity with the Enneagram, building an online coaching practice, and by her own description, writing an entirely new chapter.
Her path here was anything but linear. She began in clinical laboratory science, spent twenty-five years in operations and executive management, including a role as Branch Operations Director for Southern California at Quest Diagnostics, before finding her way to coaching and to the question that now defines her work: How do we age on purpose?
To answer it, she coined a term. Culminescence. Drawn from the word culmination, it reframes the later stages of life not as a winding down, but as an arrival. Through the Enneagram and Transitional Intelligence, Deborah helps people understand who they are at their core and use that self-knowledge to navigate the transitions later life brings, shifts in identity, purpose, relationships, and health, with clarity, resilience, and intention.
She lives in Cedaredge, Colorado, at the base of the Grand Mesa, on a ranch she shares with her husband, horses, cattle, chickens, geese, and what sounds like a very full and very good life.
I met Deborah through Deliberate Direction, a small business course offered by Al Kogler at a local co-working space here in the valley. From the moment we connected, I was struck by her skill, her openness to learning, and the quiet confidence she carries. I am glad this conversation finally made it to the mic.
