7:48 - STORIES FROM THE ROAD: "Loch Lomond"

Loch Lomond is a traditional Scottish song, Roud #9598. It was first published in 1841. The author is unknown, but the loch is the largest loch in Scotland.

I've heard a few different stories about the origins. Wikipedia lists the most-popular one being that is Jacobite song. It says there are references to it with the date 1746 attached. That was the year the Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion ended. They also have an additional verse that I've never seen used.

O braw Charlie Stewart, dear true, true heart, Wha could refuse thee protection, Like the weeping birk on the wild hillside, How graceful he looked in dejection

Nevertheless, the song is about a Scottish soldier far away in France who tells a friend to "take the high road" home. The "high road" is of course life, and a regular path to Scotland. The "low road" is about dying and having his spirit head home.

Thistle emailed: "Let me tell you of my sister. My little sister is 9 years old and did a while back suffer tremendous abuse at the hands of an idiot (who has been dealt with by the law). She doesn't speak to anyone, but music helps her to know she is safe and that is how I found your page and site. She loves Scottish music above all and I am making a fill 3TB hard-drive of music for her to remember that we love her and that she is now safe. So thank you for allowing the free download of your music even if it takes a while to get there. Kind regards."
