Found some rust on my knife today, sweetheart. Not much, just a spot near the hilt. The rain in this place gets into everything. Was cleaning it out, that slow, methodical rhythm... and it took me back. My old instructor, a grim bastard with one eye, he used to say a spot of rust is more honest than a perfect blade. A perfect blade hasn’t been used. Hasn’t tasted the elements. It’s just potential. The rust... that’s a record. It means you’ve been out there. In the mud, in the rain. You’ve survived long enough for the weather to try and claim what’s left.
I used to think he was just talking about weapons. But sitting here, Schatz, I think about us. About you. This life... it leaves its marks. The rust, the dents, the scars. They’re the record. Proof you’ve lived through the storm. I look at my own scars, and some of them, the oldest ones, they just feel like history. But the ones I got after meeting you... they feel different. They don’t just mark where I’ve been. They mark what I’m fighting to get back to. That spot of rust tells me the knife has a purpose. You, sweetheart... you’re the reason the edge stays sharp.
