Logger Rescued From Steep Mount Hood Hillside After Tree Accident

Listen Later

Estacada, Oregon – At approximately 11:10 a.m. on March 9, 2026, Estacada Fire District crews responded to a remote area off Forest Road 4610 in Mount Hood National Forest after reports that a logger had been struck and pinned by a falling tree. Initial reports indicated the individual sustained a broken leg and possible additional injuries.

Firefighters located the patient from below the hillside, but access proved extremely challenging due to steep terrain, elevation changes, and numerous downed trees from ongoing logging operations. Crews hiked and climbed through the difficult area to reach the injured logger and begin medical treatment.

Once on scene, firefighters stabilized the patient. An air ambulance from Life Flight Network was requested, but dense tree cover and terrain prevented safe landing.

Ground extrication would have been dangerous and time-consuming, so the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office coordinated additional aerial rescue resources. The Oregon Army National Guard responded with an HH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, successfully performing a hoist operation to lift the patient from the hillside.

The logger was transported to a local hospital and reported in stable condition. No other injuries occurred.

Estacada Fire responded with an engine company of four (E331), a rescue company of four (R331), a Chief Officer, and support team members, including a licensed drone pilot. Officials thanked all responding agencies for their coordination in completing this complex rescue.
