Why did Jesus have to die?

To show us:

1. It is possible to break the chains of this world's lies without having to throw everything away (permanently)
2. Exactly how painful and costly that process is
3. That He loved us enough to go through that process first

What is the lie we are holding on to because we, too, fear the truth that would set us free?
