A drop in the unemployment rate to 9.6% has many cautiously optimistic that we are climbing out of the recession. Unfortunately in the African American community there is little to celebrate. The unemployment rate in the Black community nationwide is a whopping 16%, and is not much better in Virginia with 13% of African Americans unemployed. What does long term unemployment do to the individual, the family and the community at large? We'll talk about it with guests Herbert Townsend, Interim Chair, Department of Sociology at Hampton University; Dr. Janis Sanchez, Psychology Professor at Old Dominion University; and Berdell Wilson, Resource Room Coordinator, Opp Inc One-Stop Workforce Center.
