For a few decades, there was a relative opening of research and teaching on European settler colonialism. When college students saw the connection to Israel's actions in Palestine, they led a nationwide protest movement, and then came the repression from the state, the university admins, and cultural institutions, including the defunding of postcolonial and Middle Eastern studies.
