The phrasal verb “to ask around” means to ask many different people. You can imagine that your group of friends and colleagues are in a circle, and that you are going around to each of them to ask the same question.

In English, many phrasal verbs include “around” to show that the action happens repeatedly and in more than one place. For example, if someone has moved to many different cities, we would say that “he/she has moved around a lot.”
