KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We live in a culture that doesn’t allow us to wail, essentially, and I tend to be a stoic person to begin with. Heavy metal is a way for me to get out there and yell and scream, I can use my vocal chords in that way and it’s a cathartic release. I love the feeling of the pounding in my chest at a loud heavy metal concert, it’s got its own vibration.
  • I’m fairly resistant, but if I’m willing to walk forward I can usually make just about anything happen. But I’m always resistant first, saying: “No, I can’t do that!” After some years off I said I’d never be able to sing metal again, but after a lot of building my vocal chords back up it turns out that I can, even doing some Ronnie James Dio songs.
  • At a festival in Germany I was giving myself negative self-talk thinking people wouldn’t want to watch us, but there were thousands of people there. I looked down at the front row and saw a woman singing my words back to me. At the signing party later she handed me a copy her own album where she’d covered one of my songs and it’s a really fantastic version.
  • Non-metal listeners thing of it as just noise, but it expresses so much. It pounds against me in a way that I really love, and when I’m in a group of people watching a metal show there’s an energy exchange between the musicians and the audience that is so powerful. It’s a very powerful form of music if you love it and there’s a lot of camaraderie in the metal world, especially in Europe – not so much here in the states – where they travel around Europe to festivals, it’s their life.

BEST MOMENTS

“Metal is really theatrical. The first concert I played they lowered my from the ceiling in a coffin.”
“Metal requires a lot of effort and it take a lot of energy, it’s kind of like giving birth.”
“I’m one of the mothers of obscure metal… or the grandma!”
“There’s a bit of misogyny in heavy metal, to be sure, but there are so many women singing metal.”
