Secrets of Britain's Historic Houses

Lost Elizabethan Treasure House Bought Back by The Family - Pitchford Hall Part 1

Listen Later

This time on American Viscountess, Julie visits a hidden gem of a country house in Shropshire, close to the border with Wales. Pitchford Hall is considered England’s finest Elizabethan half-timbered house.

The recent history of the Hall is a turbulent one – in 1992 it was sold and lost to the family who lived here. But by extraordinary determination and endeavour over 25 years they have returned to Pitchford. With her husband James, Rowena Colthurst, whose mother inherited Pitchford in the early 1970s, has worked tirelessly to get the family home back – but now, they’re faced with the enormous task of recovering the building from years of neglect… Julie explores the derelict areas of the hall in need of restoration and out of the estate visits the sacred place where Pitchford derives it’s name.
