A Gripping Read
In LOST WITNESS, Niki Alexander takes her readers into the dark world of homeless teens in the underbelly of Houston. Niki's a former cop who's devastated after she's forced to kill a teen. To heal herself and help adolescents who have no one to turn to, Niki begins working at a shelter for teens living on the street.
Through her work, she befriends a homeless teen named Barky. When Barky finds a terrified boy cowering next to a dead woman lying in an alley, he turns the child over to Niki. The child, who most likely witnessed the murder of his mother, will not, or can not speak. Niki is then forced to contact CPS who place the boy in a less than ideal foster home. And when the boy turns up missing, the mystery turns even more sinister.
As the police investigate the woman's murder, they come to believe she was working as a drug mule. The primary detective is sexy Nelson Spalonetti, whom Niki finds hard to resist. The two pool their professional knowledge to find the lost boy before he finds the same fate as the woman in the alley.
Niki Alexander Strides Across Houston's Underbelly
Laura Elvebak delivers a story that draws you in from the first page. Her ability to relate to and write of kids on the streets makes the reader wonder how much of this sheâs experienced herself. The intensity of the connection between the reader and the writing is as tight as you can get without actually climbing inside the characterâs skin.
LOST WITNESS is based on the dark side of Houstonâs homeless scene, with focus on the teens that become lost in the dark side of the streets.
The story opens with a homeless teen named Barky, who finds a child standing by a dead woman. The child canât or wonât talk and winds up in the grist mill of CPS. Being stuck in the mill doesnât last long though, as they soon wind up missing.
Elvebakâs heroine, Niki Alexander, winds up working alongside Detective Nelson Spalonetti, as they desperately try to locate the child before they're left in the same condition as the woman they were found near. Moving stride for stride with Spalonetti, Niki keeps pace in more ways than one, and finds the pace has just as much sexual tension as does the intensity of the murder investigation.
This is a well crafted story, sure to hold you in every aspect. The characters are fully developed, believable, and likable, leaving you with a desire to watch Niki Alexander in action againâand that reflects strongly on the talent of the author. If they leave the reader wanting to come back for more, theyâve done their job.
