Lost your job, lost your identity? What does that even mean, anyway?

That's a bl**dy good question isn't it, and one we are digging into on #CareerCarePackage. Many say "losing my identity" when they talk about job loss. But emotions people experience are more tumultuous than just wondering what you should call yourself you are out looking for work.
When researching an article around outplacement, we heard career counselors tell stories of men who had lost their job, but dressed up every day to go into their office.
They pretended to go to work because they were too ashamed to talk about what happened.
When I was made redundant, I felt stuck and in chaos.
I did not know what I wanted to do next. But I lost so much confidence I did not think I was worthy of being hired again.
You could say those men associate so strongly with their job - "you think you are only worthy if you have your job title."
Or for me "you don't know the right job for you."
These are questions of identity.
