Love and Good Influence in a Post-Factual World (en)
How can positive messages breakthrough in the era of fake news and in times of discontent? Led by an expert in social change communications, this interactive workshop will reveal how advocates for justice, inclusion and equality can use behavioral science and digital technology to craft effective campaigns and foster social engagement. It will draw on lessons from successful social movements, present tools to help advocates apply these lessons, and invite participants to engage on how to collaborate for a better world. (Hint: Love is what it's about!)

Whether we like it or not, we're hardwired to pay more attention to bad news than good news, and to see threats more clearly than opportunties. This ingrained "negativity bias" makes us susceptible to bad actors who prey on our worst instincts, and presents challenges for advocates seeking to build more empathetic, caring and fair societies. But with the right, science-based strategies, positive messages can-- and do-- breakthrough, and change is possible. The workshop facilitator, Joanna Mikulski, will review what behavioral science tells us on how to influence for good, using stories from successful initiatives to prevent violence and promote equality. She will present a framework to help advocates craft effective arguments, and lead them through a fun and interactive exercise to identify how to apply these principles for good influence in their work and digital lives.
Joanna is an experienced and dynamic speaker and faciliator, who has worked with leaders across government, philanthropy, business and non-profits to harness investment in proven solutions to prevent violence, empower women and girls, and promote the use of open technology in community development.
