Love Earth – Episode 69

Listen Later

Ramsbottom was on high alert after a large ball of fire was seen in the sky. It hung there throughout the day bringing warmth and causing people to leave the house without a coat. Naturally I’m referring to the fact that the sun came out in Ramsbottom, which in recent months is a rarity, and it didn’t even rain!

The sun was likely much welcomed at the wedding I witnessed going on at St Paul’s Church (I can only imagine what this Bride thought when they heard of the news that Bridge Street would be closed for their happy day. Check out the photo of the car on the show notes.) If all that didn’t have you skipping slightly as you walked down the streets, it was also Thomas the Tank Engine weekend on the East Lancs Railway.

So that was this weekend, what other things have gone on recently and what events are coming up?

Apologies if you’re listening expecting a run through of what to expect from this year’s Ramsbottom Festival by the way, I fully intended to provide that this week but when I started there was just too much to cover so I’m going to postpone that for another week.

I did just want to mention though that the discounted tickets have ended but it’s only £75 for the whole weekend for an adult ticket and children under 6 are free which I’ll be taking advantage of.

This year I’m going to get the full weekend and take my son, it will be his first of anything like this, it will mean more standing towards the back but it should be good fun.

Free Magazine Subscriptions

Did you see the information with regards to the free magazine subscriptions you can get simply by signing up to a site called Zinio with your library card? The Bury Council website has it in full detail but essentially you have to go to the Zinio website, create an account and provide your library card number and then you have access to the magazines.

Magazines on offer include Digital Photographer, Top Gear MagazineHorrible HistoriesWomen’s Health and many more. The website states over 90 and the Council Website states over 100, either way there is likely to be something for you there. I don’t know the full in’s and out’s of this system as of yet, for example how many magazines you can borrow at any one time, or if there is a limit on how many you can download per month as quite embarrassingly I don’t actually have my own library card.

My son has one, and we use it often however I’m not a huge reader so I never bothered to sign up for one, this is likely to force me to get one though, it’s such a good service.

The full terms of use are available also should you want to do some reading offline there are apps available for iPadiPhoneAndroid and Kindle HD/HDX tablets.

The Love Earth event is being held in Nuttall Park with many groups involved specifically Ramsbottom Community Hub though. There will be many activities going on throughout the day from storytelling with the fantastic Communitree Initiative, there will be nature art with Ramsbottom Community Hub, Incredible Edible Ramsbottom have planting, making and cooking activities planned, there is Helen of The Fair Trade Emporium (whom I interviewed way back at the start of the podcast) showcasing lots of fantastic ethically minded gifts. Essentially, there’s LOADS going on and I can’t possibly list everything here, but trust me, it’s one you’ll want to be there for. Full details can be found on the Facebook Event Page.
